How does a pub quiz work?

Never been to a pub quiz? They are easy, cheap and a great night out. Here is everything you need to know before your first one.

You play in a team

Grab a few friends - most teams are two to six people. Bigger is not always better; the best teams have a spread of knowledge rather than just numbers. Turn up, find a table, and pick a team name (the sillier the better - it gets read out).

There is usually a small entry fee

Expect to pay around £1-£2 per person, sometimes free. It is collected at the start, often towards the prize pot. You will need pens and answer sheets - the venue provides these, or these days you might check in on your phone.

The quiz runs in rounds

A typical quiz has six or so rounds of eight to ten questions - general knowledge, music, a picture round, current affairs, and often a themed "house" round. The quizmaster reads each question twice; you write your team's answer down. There is a short break to mark sheets.

Scores are tallied and prizes given

Teams swap and mark each other's sheets, or the quizmaster scores them. Running totals are read out to build tension. The winning team takes the prize - a bar tab, a round of drinks, or a cash pot - and there is often a booby prize for last place.

Some quizzes reward you for coming back

Increasingly, venues run quizzes on apps like QuizPass where you build up points, streaks and a leaderboard ranking across the weeks - and can earn rewards like a free pint for being a regular. You check in by scanning a QR with your phone; no app to download.

Frequently asked questions

How many people can be in a pub quiz team?

Usually two to six. Some venues cap team size to keep it fair. A good mix of knowledge matters more than sheer numbers.

Do you need to book for a pub quiz?

Usually not - just turn up, though popular quizzes fill up, so arriving a bit early secures a table. Some venues let you check in on your phone.

How much does a pub quiz cost?

Typically £1-£2 per person, sometimes free. The entry often goes towards the prize for the winning team.
